About

HIC History

In 1971, brothers Stephan and Jimmy Tsukayama opened Kailua Bike Shop on Uluniu Street. A year later, the infamous Energy Crisis was upon us. Bike sales soared and with the additional capital the company expanded into the wholesaling of packaged plant items. To appeal to the tourist industry, "Hawaiian Island Creations" was composed in 1972.

1974 marked the relocation to the present Kailua store on Hahani Street. Surf accessories and "Kailua Surfboards" were introduced. A year later, a full-scale skateboarding department was added. The opening of the board of water supply products, one of the first surfboard manufacturing factories soon followed. HIC's reputation of warm and friendly personal service influenced the management of Ala Moana Center to a rare invitation to HIC to open a bike and surf shop. By the summer of 1980 the HIC flagship store opened as Hawaiian Island Sports. Five years later HIC Bike and Surf opened in the Pearlridge Shopping Center. The same year, the wholesale division and board of water supply products were closed so emphasis could be placed on the growing retail division.

CORAL HEAD - HAWAIIAN ISLAND CREATIONS - WHOLESALE

In 1991, Stephan and Jimmy decided to license “Hawaiian Island Creations” to Clarence Hara who had a long history in the surf and clothing industry. Clarence has had a Hawaiian Shirt line called “Go Barefoot” that he started back in 1957 with his old friend Sterling Mossman and was grooming his son Craig to take over so he enlisted Ron Yoshida to be the managing partner of a new company Coral Head Inc. to be the new licensee of Hawaiian Island Creations. “HIC” became a hit practically overnite on the mainland in the competitive surf industry which enabled Coral Head Inc. to buy the tradename and trademarks from the Tsukayama’s. As part of the purchase agreement Coral Head Inc. licensed “HIC” back to the Tsukayama’s to use on their retail stores.

In 2003, Craig Hara became the new managing partner of Coral Head Inc. and has brought his understanding and knowledge from helping his Father run “Go Barefoot” for the past 25 years. Thru his family and friends in Hawaii, he has been able to put together boardshort collaborations with a number of the iconic Hawaiian brands – the original Primo Beer, Spam, Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, L & L Hawaiian BBQ, Hawaiian Airlines and Hawaiian Sun.

Hawaiian Island Creations continues to use their surfing roots and Hawaiian Island heritage to help promote the entire island lifestyle thru our brand.
